IRS extends filing deadlines for some South Dakota filers due to storms

The IRS has announced filing deadline relief for taxpayers living in South Dakota taxpayers in counties affected by severe storms that began on June 16, 2024. All returns due on or after that date are now due no sooner than February 3, 2024. 

The relief applies to taxpayers in the South Dakota counties of Aurora, Bennett, Bon Homme, Brule, Buffalo, Charles Mix, Clay, Davison, Douglas, Gregory, Hand, Hanson, Hutchinson, Jackson, Lake, Lincoln, McCook, Miner, Minnehaha, Moody, Sanborn, Tripp, Turner, Union, and Yankton.

Eligible taxpayers have until February 3, 2025, to file federal individual and business tax returns otherwise due between June 16, 2024 and February 3, 2025.  For example, any affected individual, business, or tax-exempt organization with a valid extension to file a calendar-year 2023 federal tax return is eligible. The relief also includes quarterly estimated payments normally due June 17, 2024, September 16, 2024, and January 15, 2025.

Additionally, the February 3, 2025 deadline applies to quarterly payroll and excise tax returns normally due July 31, 2024, October 31, 2024, and January 31, 2025.

The IRS will also abate payroll and excise tax deposit penalties that were due June 16, 2024, through July 1, 2024, as long as deposits were made by July 1, 2024.
